Thank You to our Veterans

Every year, Veterans Day gives us an opportunity to recognize the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
Behind every uniform is a person with a unique story, someone who dedicated a part of their life to serving the country. Veterans Day is a time to acknowledge that service and find meaningful ways to express our appreciation.
Veterans interviewed by the Department of Veterans Affairs have described receiving thanks in different ways. Some said it made them feel appreciated or proud, while others said the attention could feel unexpected or uncomfortable. Some simply viewed their military service as a job they had chosen to do.
That's an important reminder that showing appreciation doesn't need to be elaborate. What matters is being genuine and respectful without expecting a veteran to discuss experiences they may prefer to keep private.
If a veteran wants to talk about their service, listen. You might ask about what they did in the military, how long they served, or what they enjoyed about their experience. Avoid intrusive questions, particularly about combat or traumatic experiences.
You don't need to find the perfect words. A short, heartfelt acknowledgment can be enough.
You might say:
- “Thank you for your service.”
- “I appreciate the time you gave in service to our country.”
- “Thank you for your service and sacrifice.”
- “I'm grateful for what you and other veterans have done for our country.”
- “It means a lot to know that you served. Thank you.”
Appreciation can extend beyond words. Writing a card, volunteering with a veteran-supporting organization, attending a community Veterans Day event, or simply getting to know a veteran can help you express your gratitude more personally. Consider community involvement and relationship building as ways to honor veterans.
Veterans Day is more than a date on the calendar. It is an opportunity to recognize the people behind the service and acknowledge the time, commitment, and sacrifices that military life can require.
This November 11, take a moment to thank a veteran in a way that feels sincere and respectful.
To all our veterans: thank you for your service, your dedication, and the sacrifices you and your families have made. We appreciate you, not only on Veterans Day but throughout the year.
